Power and Performance

The rules of the “cyber-world” are just like the rules of engagement; you have to play it safe and make sure you are being cautious and smart in all you do. The Internet is one of those places that takes that into effect. You have know right from wrong all the time and with everything thing you do.

For example, it’s important to understand not just the security of an exchange server, but its limits as well. Be aware of the laws of certain websites and be sure that you read over the entire terms and condition sections. You can make it so much easier just by reading these laws because they will explain everything and offer guidance of what activity is and is not allowed on that particular website. Just remember that all websites usually have these posted and it is worth reading and digesting.

When creating things on the web you really have to be aware you are acting properly. Copyrights are one of those things. You need to be sure that when you are creating or doing something on the Internet, that it is nothing that would push the boundaries of copyright laws. These laws are vital to a very stable Internet system.

Keeping these things in mind as you surf the Internet or use your exchange server will make it much easier to go in sync with the web. Even though there are quite a few laws that you need to follow, the Internet is pretty much an open playing field. To help protect yourself, you should consider privacy scans.

Hello Mr. Robot

When talking about Android I’m not talking about science fiction robots that walk and talk like humans. It is the new cell phone and tablet operating system that is taking the world by storm. Android is an Open Source operating system that was founded in 2003 and then purchased by Google in 2005 and developed by them and other members of the Open Handset Alliance. The first Android phone came out in late 2008 and took the market by storm. The point of the Android platform was to give the user more options, better reliability and to directly compete with the Apple iPhone.

Since Androids inception, it has been developed and tweaked to be able to run on various other devices. The Android operating system can be found on netbooks and tablets as well as cell phones. With Android being owned by Google, it gives the operating system more leverage to produce more mobile applications. Android is an Open Source operating system which allows multiple different companies and users to contribute to it’s development. This gives the software more power as it has the collective minds of the whole world, instead of just Google employees.

Android is currently on it’s 6 version of the operating system with version 3.0, codenamed Honeycomb, out in 2011. Some people wonder if Google is able to compete with Apple in the cellphone and tablet markets. Well, in the fourth quarter of 2010, Android became the world’s best-selling cellphone operating system. How is that for a start? With 2011 well under way, Apple will certainly have some compition on it’s hands. And it comes in the form of Anroid.

What are you watching?

Have you ever stopped to think about the T.V. that you are sitting there watching right now? The first television sets started off in the late 1920′s and was black and white. These TV sets were not like the ones made today. There was a turn knob to change the channel and volume. Yes, that’s right, you had to get up to change the channel. Or, you could have your kids do it. In the mid 1950′s, color was added to the TV sets. This was mainly owned by the wealthier consumers as the price was still fairly high.

Free here, ownership of a TV set exploded. By the 1980′s every household owned a TV set and some had multiple sets in their homes. TV’s got bigger and less expensive. In 1998, the flat panel TV was introduced by Philips. This allows for a thinner and lighter TV. The two different types of mainstream flat panels are Plasma and LCD. The quality on these two types of TVs are sharper, brighter, and clearer then their predecessors. This types of TVs also use less power to run.

TV signals also started out as an analog radio transmission. Signals are now required to be digital and the option is also there for a high definition signal. 3-D TVs have just hit the market and boast the fact that you can watch any programming or movie in 3-D right from the comfort of your own home. So grab some popcorn and watch till your hearts content.

I miss you

Most people don’t think about their hard drive space or, physically, how big their hard drive is. Hard drives first came around in the mid 1950′s as data storage for IBM. The first hard drives were roughly the size of a small room and was able to store a whopping 4MB of data. The physical size of the hard drive shrunk as the data storage capacity grew for the next 40 years. As computers became more mainstream in the 1990′s, storage capacity doubled roughly every 2 years.

A typical hard drive consists of a platter or platters where the information is stored, read/write heads that store and access the information, and motors to drive the read/write heads. There is also removable media that is used in devices such as digital cameras, cell phones, and MP3 players. This type of drive does not use motors and platters, but instead uses electrical contacts to read and write data.

SSD or Solid-State Drives have been around since the 1970′s and is the form used in the removable cards is in digital devices. This is beneficial as they can be dropped with little to no damage done.  The contact pins are recessed so that they aren’t touched easily. Other media that has been produced is the 5 1/4” floppy disk, the 3 1/2” floppy disk which wasn’t so floppy, the CD and the DVD. These types of media were used for transportation of data in a portable version. Currently, most people use a USB flash drive or portable hard drive to store data. These are perfect, but you still want to take precautions as some data is priceless and may not be able to be easily recovered. The best option is to back up sensitive data in multiple locations.

Should you wish to play in any of these online gambling sites, it is important that you brush up on the laws to make sure that you are not breaking any state or federal laws.

Some states will allow online gambling as long as the servers of the website are located in the state the players reside in or on Indian reservations. Is your Info Safe

There has been a lot of debate lately on whether social networking sites protect your privacy. Most of the social networking sites require your name, email address, a user-name and password. However, there are some sites that also require, or ask, for additional information and their default settings are to allow other users, whether friends or not, to see this information. How is this protecting your privacy? There are a few companies that are changing your default privacy settings, but they are far from where they need to be.

What would happen it someone hacked into your account? Your personal information is readily available to this hacker. There are possibly personal photos of you and your family. This allows the hacker to easily see where you live, what your phone number is, and the could even check your previous posts to see what your daily routine is. Is this safe? Imagine if someone you don’t know decides to “friend” you on Facebook. This person looks harmless enough and you decide to accept the friendship. This person now knows where you live.

Make sure that you check your privacy settings on each and every social networking site. Make sure that only Friends can see your personal information and make sure to verify each person that requests you as a friend or follows you.

Now, not every story of privacy invasion in social networking is bad. There have been some lives saved due to the diligence of mindful users alerting the proper authorities in a users time of need.  Social networking is certainly apart of many lives, not just in the USA, but in the entire world. However, we need to take every precaution to make sure that our information is safe. Check your privacy settings and make sure to only allow people you know to see your information. It’s your responsibility to check yourself safe from prying eyes.
